With headphones this is effective at keeping me from getting distracted by noises outside my workspace. I wish it was useful even without earbuds and I wish the minimum volume would be maintained even while changing soundtracks.

I love gadgets, but the best ones I own are my iPhone with some Shure in ear headphones. With this app (or Ambiance, both are excellent) you can be sat next to a crying baby on an aeroplane and hear nothing but peaceful rain. Probably doesnt work so good without decent headphones - so go get some!
Nothing new here. The "masking" is just the same noise / rain sounds that you can find in any of the many relaxation apps around for 99c! The only difference is that the volume of the sound is dynamically controlled BUT as this takes time, the volume increase is always after the sound event so the program is not good at masking random external sounds. The harmonic masked would be a great relaxation tool if it wasnt for the many pops and clicks in the sound. Stick to something like Ultimate Relax etc. - theyre better and more useful apps. Can I have my money back?
I wish I had my money back. Not worth the price. I feel like a sucker.
Definitely not worth the price. I was expecting something AT LEAST better than I got. To all that wrote good reviews, it was very misleading.
Need I say more? I want my money back.
Works as described.
This is a cool idea and it works fairly well, until the cracks and pops start distracting you. These little glitches really kill the utility of the app for me, but it seems like simply improving audio encoding might fix the problem.
The intermittent crackling and popping sounds make this App useless. Who wants to be relaxing and then be jarred by this awful noise. The App is also missing the simplest feature, being able to save settings. Cmon guys. Also, the sounds are not relaxing, but rather irritating. Since you HAVE to use headphones and cant use the internal speaker, its useless for sleeping (which is mostly when you would want this kind of program). Of course if you dont mind damaging your hearing while you sleep, getting tangled in the headset cord, and possibly crushing your phone, then its perfect for that.
All this waste off money does is add more noise. It does nothing to reduce background noise.
I was excited by the possibilities of version 1.0, but some audio bugs prevented me from being able to fully use the program. They have all been resolved in version 1.1, and now it performs quite well. Im using it now, in fact, while I sit in a noisy coffee shop. Its difficult to describe the way it works; it masks exterior sound by generating, on the fly, audio that is less distracting. It does this by sampling the ambient audio with the microphone attached to your headphones. (obviously, iPhone-type headphones, with a mic, are required). It has a number of modules, each of which create different-sounding masking. I find the Rain Masker one the most useful, but the one called Noise Masker is the most clever. Noise Masker plays back the audio it hears in a softened, distorted manner, with lots of echos, which gives the effect of sitting on an upper balcony of a huge marble train station, listening to all the people coming and going down below.
It may or may not be worth $3.99 depending on what you expect. If youre expecting your iPhone to react like airplane noise canceling headphones youve come to the wrong place. I give it 3 *s because it is after aptly named it is a curtain not a cement wall.
I love this app! As has been already described in many previous reviews, I work in a silly omg you ordered the ceasar salad blah blah blah why is the clock moving soooo slow impossible to think in hell, AND this app allows me to concentrate and be way more productive. Hooray for me! The title of this review is in reference to those impossible tight-wads who complain that ANY piece of software that even comes close to working well is over-priced at $4! You idiots have obviously never developed anything for a living (beyond perhaps happy meals or annoying telemarketer phone calls), AND without a doubt spent more on your last cup of coffee, which was but a forgotten memory 20 minutes later. Grow up. Ive withheld the 5th star here because the battery drain is a bit excessive, though not without reason Im sure. Math is hard.
White noise is all it is good for. Definitely no sound suppression.
To cut through the marketing BS, its an ambient noise generator that increases volume when it detects sounds through the microphone. The effect is kind of like the Ford car stereos that increase volume as you accelerate. Two problems problems for me: 1. It doesnt react quickly enough to mask noise even on the highest sensitivity. 2. Theres an ugly display bug in sensitivity and min level sliders that makes them grow off the side of the screen as you increase them toward max. My suggestion is to save your money and buy a free or 99 cent noise generator and work the volume yourself. May I have my money back please?
Why after reading the reviews did I waste my money on this piece of garbage? Absolute crap. Your better of sticking balled up Kleenex in your ears.
Does not perform as it describes. I expected fast response audio interference. This app takes as much as 3/4 of a second to process and play the corresponding noise. Nowhere near fast enough to achieve the desired result. Decent idea and the application desc sounds like it comes from someone who knows what they are talking about, but the app just does not perform. Worth $1 for trying, not worth more.
I love it!!
I wonder why people are having a hard time seeing the usefulness of this app. It worked well on my 3G, and seems to be working even better on the iPhone 4, perhaps due to the faster processor. I find the "wind" preset to work the best, with rain a second-place. Turn up the sensitivity, and it works even better. I find this well worth the cash.
A good app, but since it does not function in the background, I cannot use it 90% of the time. Once you switch to another application such as iBooks, etc. Soundcurtain stops generating noise. If they added background functionality and improved reaction speeds to block ambient noise, it would be a 4-5 star app. Also, it would be nice if the app worked better with the iphones built-in microphone and speakers (it currently seems to require a plug-in headset to work properly). As is, I give it 2-3 stars.
